How To Confidently Ride A Dirt Bike For The First Time Without Falling or Crashing – Even If Your Bike Feels Tall, Heavy, or Powerful
Discover the basic techniques using my “Backyard Confidence Method” to comfortably ride and use the controls on flat ground, turns, basic obstacles, and hills, whether sitting or standing
“Managing throttle control has made a huge difference in my confidence riding. Doing drills with Kelley helped me learn how to comfortably switch gears and brake allowing me to ride more confidently with my sons. I’m able to adjust without overreacting which has definitely helped me not crash as much! I feel more at one with the bike and love it!”

7 Signs You Have BAD Dirt Bike Riding Technique
- You stall at least 25% of the time when starting out in first gear
- You sit down at least 90% of the time because it’s uncomfortable or exhausting to stand while riding
- Shifting gears up or down feels awkward because dirt bike boots are stiff, especially while standing
- Your throttle feels “JERKY”, intimidating, and is hard to control at slow speeds or when standing and accelerating
- Tight turns are a struggle because the bike feels heavy and you either put a foot down or fall over nearly half of the time
- Coming to a stop, you fall over at least 50% of the time when the ground is uneven because the bike feels really tall or heavy
- Your hands or wrists get fatigued or cramp within 15 minutes of riding, especially when standing
You’re probably making at least one of these mistakes:
- Focusing more on controlling/using the throttle when getting going in first gear
- You stand up straight or mostly bend at the knees, making it uncomfortable or exhausting to stand while riding
- You raise the shift lever to make it easier to get your foot under to shift up because your boots feel too stiff
- You’re “reacting” to the bike, where your arms get pushed and pulled when you accelerate or decelerate, so the bike is controlling YOU
- You sit in the same spot and lean “with” the bike when turning
- You just put a foot down when coming to a stop and hope that you’ll reach without falling over
- You squeeze the bars while riding because you’re “tense” or feel the need to grip hard to keep the bike in control
If you’ve made any of these mistakes, it’s because you lack confidence and are not using the basic techniques of riding off-road.
But that’s okay… We ALL start there!
I want to make riding ENJOYABLE for you – and that starts with being SAFE!
After teaching many students (in-person and online), I’ve discovered the biggest challenges people face learning to ride a dirt bike, whether it’s their first time or getting back into riding off-road after 20+ years.
I’ve put together the shortest, simplest, and safest system so that you can take and apply it TODAY to safely ride a dirt bike by building your confidence using proper techniques.
You Do NOT Need To Be Strong or Tall To Safely Ride A Dirt Bike
When the bike weighs more than you and you can’t flat foot both feet on the ground, it’s easy to think that learning how to ride a dirt bike without crashing is scary and you’ll never have confidence – I totally understand your concern!
But did you know that many of the best riders in the world (off-road or motocross) are under 5’10” and weigh less than 160 lbs? Take Ricky Carmichael – he’s only 5’6″ and weighed 150 lbs when racing professionally on a 60 HP 450cc dirt bike that weighed 250 lbs.
Or how about trials riders – they keep their feet on the pegs the entire time, which means they have learned how to balance their bike and body.
It’s a matter of discovering the basic riding techniques and efficiently shifting your body to stay balanced and relaxed. Mastering these at “slow speeds” is safer and necessary to build confidence because you will better understand what your bike is doing underneath you.
When you try to ride too fast too soon, you’re increasing your risk of crashing harder because you don’t have 100% control of your bike. It’s like trying to run before walking.
