What Causes A Dirt Bike To Run Poorly?
Why does my bike only run on choke?
A dirt bike that only runs with the choke on is usually running too lean. The most common cause is a dirty or clogged pilot circuit from old fuel sitting in the carburetor. The choke temporarily adds fuel, which is why the bike runs better with it on.
Other possible causes include:
• clogged carb passages
• air leaks
• incorrect pilot jet size
• improper fuel/air screw adjustment
Many riders immediately start replacing random parts, but a proper diagnosis usually saves a lot of time and frustration.
Can ethanol fuel cause problems?
Yes. Ethanol fuel attracts moisture and breaks down faster than non-ethanol fuel, especially when a bike sits for months.
Over time it can:
• clog jets and passages
• leave varnish deposits
• cause hard starting
• create inconsistent idle problems
• contribute to bogging or poor throttle response
This is one of the most common problems I see on bikes that sat through winter storage.
Do cheap Amazon carbs cause issues?
Sometimes.
Many low-cost aftermarket carbs have inconsistent tolerances and lower-quality internal components.
Common issues can include:
• hard starting
• inconsistent jetting
• poor throttle response
• fuel leaks
• difficulty tuning
Some work okay, but many riders spend hours trying to fix symptoms that come from the carb itself rather than the jetting. OEM or higher-quality replacements are often easier to tune and more reliable long-term.
Do I always need new jets?
No.
Many riders start changing jets immediately, but dirty passages, old fuel, air leaks, or improper adjustment are often the real problem.
Jetting changes are useful when:
• riding at different elevation
• temperature changes significantly
• engine modifications were made
• factory settings are far off for your conditions
Guessing at jets first often wastes time and can make things worse.
Can a dirty carb really cause all these symptoms?
Absolutely.
A dirty carb can cause:
• hard starting
• only running on choke
• hanging idle
• fuel overflow
• bogging
• poor throttle response
• fouled plugs
Many bikes that sit for months or years simply develop clogged passages from fuel deposits and varnish buildup.
Why does my dirt bike bog when I give it gas?
Bogging usually happens because the engine isn't getting the correct air/fuel mixture at that throttle position.
Common causes:
• dirty pilot jet
• lean jetting
• rich jetting
• air leaks
• incorrect float level
• fuel delivery problems
The biggest mistake riders make is assuming every bog is the same.
A lean bog often feels like the engine is dying:
"Bwaaaahhh"
A rich bog usually feels loaded up:
"Brapapap..."
The first step is identifying when the bog happens and what it sounds like.
How long does carb tuning service usually take?
Most jobs are completed within about 3–5 business days, depending on:
• bike condition
• carb type
• parts availability
• severity of the problem
Simple cleaning and tuning issues are often faster, while bikes that sat for years or need additional parts may take longer.
My Goal Is Simple:
I want your bike to start easier, idle cleaner, and run more predictably so you can enjoy riding instead of constantly troubleshooting.
If something still doesn’t feel right after service, I’ll work with you to help identify the issue and make it right.

Hi, my name is Matt. I understand you do carbs and also purchase older bikes. With that being said, please allow me to run something by you. I have a 2008 rmz 250. It needs the top end put back together. Not blown up. Head was removed and found cam journals pretty bad. Now I have a brand new suzuki head and cams. My issue is bucket shims? For the valves. Never done them before. If you are at all interested, I pay cash and I am just north of st.francis and west of isanti. And of course it's been sitting for almost a year, will need carb work..
Anyways let me know if your services are available. Thanks Matt 763 301 1325
