They buy a bike that isn't a good "fit" for them usually because:
They don't want to "outgrow" their bike and have to sell it in 6-12 months
Their buddies recommended it without knowing what they were getting into
They've been riding on the street for 20+ years and expect the "transition to dirt" to be easy...
They don't trust any "Used" bike, so they buy "New", even though they have to take out a loan because they can't afford it
It's the "only deal" they could find within their price range
They follow the advice of the "sales rep" at the motorcycle dealer
Or they just don't know the difference between the models and how to know what they need
If any of these sound like you, don't worry - you're not alone!
Virtually all of these happen either due to misinformation or a lack of information from research.
But, research takes time and energy!
That's why I want to share my knowledge to help YOU save you time AND frustration from spending hours and days researching only to buy the WRONG bike!
For example, here are some popular dirt bikes that beginners or newer trail riders should AVOID:
Husqvarna TE 300 2-stroke
KTM 350 XCF
Honda CRF450RL
Yamaha YZ250F
I continue to hear from friends and viewers who start on these bikes and tell me how they crashed and got hurt or at minimum got scared and are now intimidated to ride their new dirt bike - NOT good when you just spent $6000-10,000+!
Let's say you buy a new Husky TE 300 because you'll "never outgrow it" and you don't trust buying a "used bike".
It retails for $11,699 (plus destination, setup, tax, etc). Probably close to $13k out-the-door, but let's just say you got a deal for $12,000 OTD.
You ride it for 5 hours, have a whiskey throttle crash, and find out that you're in over your head - what do you do?
Option 1: Do you spend another $500-2000 in aftermarket parts, such as a throttle tamer, Rekluse auto clutch, and an ECU tune to try and "tame the beast"?
You might be up to $14k+ in the bike (but those extra parts don't increase the resale value that much if at all).
Option 2: Or do you sell it for a loss, take a hit to your pride, and get a "slower" trail bike?
Even though it only has 5 hours, the second it leaves the showroom (dealer), it loses value.
So that $12k+ bike is now worth $10k at best - that's a $2000 LOSS and you've barely rode the bike!
Maybe you can afford to keep it and buy another bike to build your confidence on, but in this economy, I'm willing to bet that's not an option for you.
Either way, you're at a loss, unfortunately...
If you haven't bought a bike yet, I'm not trying to scare you, but rather warn you, especially if you're newer to dirt bikes and don't have any experience riding a modern motocross or enduro race bike.
If you want to invest in confidence, and safety, and save time, I'm here to help assist you in making the wisest decision.
Who’s It For?
Do any of these sound like you?
You want to buy your first dirt bike or upgrade to your next off-road motorcycle with confidence but don't know where to start
You don't want to waste hours and days researching what "might" be best for you when it comes to new or used bikes, riding gear, etc., and would rather get personalized help from a professional
You need help choosing the right bike for the type of riding you'll be doing
You need to stay within a budget price range (I.E. Under $1,500 vs $6,000)
You're afraid of buying "used" because it might need a lot of work, but you can't afford a brand-new bike without taking out a loan of some kind
You're not sure what to look for when buying a used bike and don't want to buy something that will need a rebuild or lots of work
If you said "Yes" to any one of these, then this is for YOU!
Why Trust Me? (Kelley)
I'm just some random guy on the internet, so why should you trust me with your hard-earned money?
I'm just an average guy from Minnesota who started on a Honda 50, but my career on buying, fixing, and learning about dirt bikes started when my loving dad helped me buy a '97 XR100 and a '00 CR80 - both needed work.
Since then, I've looked at hundreds of used dirt bikes, bought many of them, from a KTM 50, to a Yamaha YZ450F, and just about every size and type of bike in between.
I learned what's most important when looking at a used bike, what it takes to make it last hundreds of hours without blowing it up, and how to choose what size bike is best based on 3 simple factors.
I hate seeing and hearing about people getting hurt - especially newer riders because he or she often get scared and quit or they take YEARS to build their confidence.
But, those stories might be different had they chosen the right bike for the job and their specific needs.
That's where I come in because I've been helping hundreds of people in person and online pick a dirt bike that will fit them personally, because a YZ250X may be great for one person, but the next guy or gal may need an XTrainer.
While I generally steer people towards the "Safer" option when choosing a bike, I will give you the most objective direction and advice while considering all bikes as a potential option. After all, it's YOUR money 🙂
